Sign Language in Medical Setting, the second event in our Sign Language Series, was held successfully on 4 April. We were delighted to have Ms Man Ho Ching Heidi and Ms Bou Suet Yee Amy from SLCO Community Resources as our guest speakers. Heidi has been working as a sign language interpreter for over 4 years, signing for talks, classes, conferences, performing arts, etc. Amy is a deaf teacher who has engaged in bilingual sign language education for over 8 years. During the workshop, they provided insights into the situation of medical sign language in Hong Kong, for example, how sign language interpreters are assigned to deaf patients in hospitals. They also taught us how to sign for symptoms such as headache, sore throat, and runny nose, and shared with us their work and daily experiences. We greatly appreciate our guest speakers for an enlightening workshop and SLCO Community Resources for such a valuable opportunity!

Comments from the speaker:

“I couldn’t listen to the students’ (simultaneous) interpreting while I was talking, but I know they must have done a great job from the audience’s reactions. I switched between Cantonese and English during the talk, and they handled this well.” – Heidi

Comments from participants:

“I'm so happy we had this event today. It's great to be able to learn more about sign language interpreting in Hong Kong. It's a topic that we don't really talk about that often in our translation and interpreting voices, and I think it's really important.” – Marija

“I love how this workshop was structured – two brief talks followed by two Q&A sections, so we can ask questions after having some inputs.” – Jennifer

“I think it’s worthwhile attending the workshop. It’s good to know the challenges deaf persons are facing.”

– Participant of the event
